Hancock's Jewelry
Delmar & Docia Hancock came to Dwight in 1954
and bought Klingler Jewelers. In 1962 they purchased Lewis Jewelers at
112 East Main Street and moved to that location where they remain
today. After moving into this building the facade was renovated. They
are the oldest retail business on Dwight's Main Street and the oldest
jewelry store in Livingston County. They have served the residents of
Dwight
and surrounding communities for over 54 years.

| Kaiser's $.05 and $.10
Built sometime in the early 1880's this building was originally
the Miller Brothers Men's Store featuring an ornamental facade made by
Mesker Brothers Ironworks in St. Louis, MO. F.W. Kaiser opened
Kaiser's 5¢ to $1.00 Store September 5, 1944 offering a wide variety
of merchandise. Known as the "Dime Store" it was a mainstay of the
downtown business district for over 50 years, closing in 1995. The
building later became home to Dwight Variety and then Main Street
Company Gifts & Collectibles.

Ambler/Becker Route 66 Gas Station—
Recognized as the longest operating gas station on Rt. 66, this house with canopy style structure was built in 1933. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001 and the Rt. 66 Association Hall of Fame in 2005. Completely renovated, the building serves as the Dwight, IL Welcome Center along the Route 66 Red Carpet Corridor. Dwight, Illinois

Dwight Township High School—
The first day of classes were held march 11, 1957. There were 229 students enrolled at this time. DTHS is home of the Trojans!

Dwight Correctional Center—
Built in 1929 as the State Reformatory for Women. It was renamed on August 1, 1973. Today the prison is home to over 1,000 women.

The Pioneer Gothic Church—
The first church built in Dwight was in 1857 for the Presbyterian Church. On September 23, 1860, the Prince of Wales attended services here. In 1892 it was sold to the Danish Methodist Church until December 1924 when it was bought by the Christian Science Church. It was renovated in 1967 by the Dwight Historical Society and is now owned by Dwight Township. Dwight, Illinois

Blackstone Theatre—
Originally named the Keeley Treatment Hall and Opera House, the new Blackstone Theatre opened in 1920. The last movie played December 13, 1979. The building was razed in 1981. Dwight, Illinois

Dwight News Agency—
Built sometime in the late 1880’s, this building first housed the Dwight Art Co. Photographers and then the N. N.Mickelson Studio. In 1898 the U.S. Post Office moved in on the right side and resided there until the 1930’s when the new post office was built. The left side was home to O’Malley’s Drug Store and later, the Senior Citizen Center. Frank “Bike” Beiswanger (on the right side) purchased the “newsstand” in 1967. After nearly 43 years in the business, Bike retires and the building was torn down in 1989 to make way for the First national Bank of Dwight expansion. Dwight, Illinois

Ohlendorf’s Bakery—
On January 5, 1907 the bakery was opened by Gus Ohlendorf. It moved to this location in 1919. With his two sons, Harold and Herman, they operated two shifts to supply baked goods to the community. The bakery was moved in 1977 to the Country mansion. This is the oldest operating business in Dwight that is still operating under the same family name. Dwight, Illinois

Fox Center—
Originally the Keeley Office building in 1891, it was rebuilt after a fire in 1903. In 1919 it became a Veteran’s Administration Hospital. When it closed in July of 1965, the state opened it as the W.W. Fox Developmental Center. Dwight, Illinois

East Side School—
The cornerstone of this building was laid on October 29, 2896. It was completed in 1898 at a cost of $18,000. This school was home to both elementary and high school students. In 1902 funds contributes by citizens built the third floow into a gymnasium. The building was razed and Heritage Manor Nursing Home is in its location. Dwight, Illinois
