Here you will see examples of Frank Lloyd Wright, Richardson Romanesque, Greek Classic, Carpenter Gothic and Messkar. You will find artwork by Oscar Gross and Carlos Lopez as well as stained glass windows made by Louis J. Millet, a protogee of Tiffany. Several of these sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. |
| Dwight Main Street Inc. 815-584-1830 The small building located to the south of the Depot was formerly the freight office. Here the items shipped over the railroad were recorded. This building is currently home to the Dwight Main Street Program. Dedicated to downtown revitalization and preservation, Dwight became an Illinois Main Street Community in 1999. The building is on "The National Register Of Historic Places." |
| Dwight Area Chamber of Commerce Dwight Historical Society Museum 815-584-2091 815-584-1652 Both are currently located in the Dwight Railroad Depot, originally the Alton Railroad Depot built in 1891 designed by Henry Ives Cobb. It is also used as the Amtrak Station. The purpose is to preserve the history and culture that pertains to the Dwight area. When visiting Dwight, we recommend stopping in and seeing the Dwight Historical Society at 119 W. Main Street. The Dwight Historical Society is open the second and fourth Sundays of each month from 1:30PM to 3:30PM. The building is on "The National Register Of Historic Places." |
| Bank of Dwight 815-584-1855 The Bank of Dwight, founded April 10, 1855 by David McWilliams, is the oldest business institution in the village. The current building, built in 1910, is Greek Classic in design. It was remodeled in 1974 to expand to the adjacent building. An original mural painted by Viennese artist Oskar Gross is displayed on the dome in the bank. |
| First National Bank 815-584-1212 Architect Frank Lloyd Wright engineered the building of this bank in 1905. It is the only one of three banks still standing. It was expanded in 1970 and again in 1989. The general structure has not changed and the original woodwork has been kept intact. |
| William W. Fox Developmental Center 815-584-3347 This residential facility provides support and services for people with developmental disabilities. This is the original site of the Leslie Keeley Company and the Livingston Hotel. Tiffany inspired glass windows made by Louis J. Millet, one signifying each of the five senses,can be seen above the main entrance. Tours available. |
| Pioneer Gothic Church 815-584-1959 Built in 1857 by the Presbyterian Congregation, this is the first church built in Dwight. It is a fine example of Carpenter Gothic architecture with pointed arched windows and doors as well as board and batten frame construction.The Prince of Wales attended church at this site in 1860 while here in Dwight on a hunting expedition for wild birds. Presently, it is the property of Dwight Township and is used for meetings and receptions. The church is on "The National Register Of Historic Places." |
| Dwight Windmill The Windmill was built in 1896 to supply water for the Oughton Estate and grounds. The Windmill was gifted to the Village of Dwight in 2001 by Mike & Bev Hogan. Since 2002 the Windmill and grounds have been restored. The Windmill was placed on "The National Register Of Historic Places" in 1980. |
| The Country Mansion 815-584-2345 or 800-892-5969 The original structure was built as a boarding house in 1891. It was purchased and moved to its present site in 1895. It was used as a private home until 1928 and then given to the Keeley Co., and renamed The Lodge. In 1977, the home was purchased by the Ohlendorfs, remodeled and opened as The Country Mansion. On September 23, 1980 the home was placed, and remains today, on "The National Register Of Historic Places." |
| Dwight Public Library 815-584-3061 Built in 1896 as a carriage house to house prize cattle and horses for the Oughton Estate, it was later transformed into a treatment and recreation building for the Keeley Co. In 1989, the Oughtons donated the building to the library. Today it is the new home for the Prairie Creek District Library. The building is on "The National Register Of Historic Places." |
| Renfrew Park This 17 acre park, a gift from David McWilliams to the Village of Dwight in 1897, was designed by Ossian Cole Simonds, a noted North America Landscape Architect who also designed Graceland Cemetery in Chicago. When the Prince of Wales visited Dwight while on a hunting expedition, he travelled under the name of Baron Renfrew and stayed on the property as a guest of James C. Spencer. Baron Renfrew later became King Edward VII. Today this popular park is home to three picnic shelters, numerous picnic tables, three large playgrounds, tennis courts, and a baseball field. |
| Robert Stevenson Swimming Pool 815-584-3385 This swimming pool is a memorial to former Mayor Robert Stevenson. The Olympic sized pool is open from May 30 through September 1, weather permitting. It is located in the beautiful Renfrew Park. |
| Old Route 66 Built in the 1920's, Route 66, also known as "The Mother Road" brought many people through Dwight on their way West looking for a more prosperous life. The road was originally built as Route 4 and has followed four different routes through Dwight. An authentic 1930's gas station located on the corner of Routes 66 & 17 is being restored to serve as a village welcome center. The station was named to the Route 66 Association Hall of Fame in 2005 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. |
| Lions Lake 815-584-3077 This new lake is located on Old Route 66 at the southeast edge of Dwight. Donated to the Village in 1994 and improved with funding from local organizations, the lake offers a beautifully landscaped picnic area, fishing and a paved bike, walking & jogging path. |
| Dwight Country Club 815-584-9825 This beautiful and challenging 18 hole golf course was chartered and given the name of Dwight Country Club in November 1913. In July of 1951, the Women's Club organized the Women's Golf Club and raised funds to renovate the club house. The Dwight Country Club is located one mile west of Dwight on Route 17. It is open to the public with daily green fees and cart rentals. |
| Dwight Correctional Center 815-584-2608 Dwight Correctional Center was constructed in 1929 as a state reformatory for women. Originally named Oakdale, the Dwight Correctional Center received its present day name in 1973. Tours are available by appointment only. |
